"citizennick" (citizennick)

Found this picture online, so basically the same setup as me. Last time I was on the track I was sliding too much in the Recaros. Someone at an auto-x had some of these and said he loved them. Got a NASA event next weekend and was thinking about getting one. Under $200, so not bad. Not ready to put a roll bar and a 6-point harness in the car.

Wait so how does it secure to the car?

Make sure you get one for the passenger side... Equivalent protection between dr and pas seats is normally required for NASA events
I have the Rallye4. They’re great

They buckle into the back seats belts.

I'm just getting one for now, don't ever have passengers!

Seat belt engineer here... A 5 or 6 point will be way safer. The lap and shoulder belts can mount the same way. The crotch belt(s) are called anti submarine belts because submarining, or sliding under the belts, is very dangerous
Submarining effect - standard seatbelt vs harness:
All that said, I did survive a crash at rally school in four point belts. ALWAYS TIGHTEN THE LAP BELTS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE

I know but I don't want to put a roll cage and seat into my car just yet. I just want this to keep me firm in the seat, less sliding around than my normal bet.

At an AutoX, submarining isn’t going to be a very likely issue. I’d hope, at least.

You don’t need a roll cage, you would pretty much mount it the same as a 4 point. Just don’t remove the stock belt setup if you go with a 4 point.

What are your thoughts on the spacing of the shoulder belts? It looks like they are mounted together and the picture shows them going through the headrest, I’ve always heard and logically reasoned that is really bad.

Do they clip in to the rear buckles, or just use the same mounting locations?

On that seat it would probably be OK. Normally though, it is a terrible idea because it will break those and slide off of the seat

I was always under the impression that it would do serious damage to your neck, crushing it basically, in a crash.
The rules for most racing series specifically ban mounting belts like that, but you see it all the time on the street and it always makes me cringe.

You mean like a Y type belt? Yeah that is not good. The shoulder belts should be parallel

yeah, that’s what I meant, or having the rear mounting points of separate belts coincident, effectively making it a Y belt

Very unsafe indeed!

and that’s the problem I see here, even if it is mounted correctly at the back, what’s going to break first here, the blood vessels in your neck or the supports for the head rest?

I would never use this in a situation where a crash could actually happen. You can see the stock seatbelt in the picture

Yeah it is, I'm going to try and do outside the headrest if they stay put.

This belt can be removed when not using it, it doesn't replace the factory belt at all. I'm just looking for something that keeps me nice and firm in my seat so I feel the car through the corners better.

Gotcha. Just definitely don’t use it on the street or at the track. AX is OK.

I’m assuming this belt has the schroth anti-submarine system where there is a small breakaway stitched into one of the sholder belts which lets the body move forward enough to prevent a submarining situation. Schroth knows their stuff pretty well.

I have a schroth quick fit pro which is very similar, I used to use it a lot in my old STi for AX, I thought it was great. I hardly ever use it anymore because I have a miata now. They make some very nice high quality stuff.

You could tie them loosely together with elastic to make sure they do, something like loop-10”-loop.

Why not the track? Whats so different between this and using my standard seat belt?

I'll have to look the quick fit up, didn't see it on their website.

If you have an off at a track into a wall, this thing will not protect you much. Like someone else said, y-type belts are not allowed in any racing series for a reason

Any suggestions for something safe and useful on the track without having to do extensive work? Just really want to limit the sliding around in my seat.

Does your seatbelt have the thing where it locks when you pull it all the way out and have to feed it all back in before you can do anything? Some people do that to keep tight. Or that after sliding the seat back then sliding it forward to make it tighter

I'll try that, what's that contraption called that you clip on your belt? Idk What it is or does, know what I'm talking about? Some people use them.
